On a flight back from OSH we were about 2000 AGL across the midwest and my friend, with Wing X, would get warnings about each of the many tall radio/cell towers.

Maybe I am not seeing it, but I don't believe IFLY does that.

Sure was nice getting those warnings. Those towers are very hard to see.

Hi John,

iFly GPS does support the same type of Tower and Obstacle alerts. It may just be a setting that is keeping you from seeing them. Touch Setup, Alerts and Warning, and then make sure the Terrain Alerts are on, set to moderate in the beginning. Currently the Towers/Obstacles are combined, but I'd like to see the Terrain and Towers/Obstacle split apart into separate alerts. Many may no care about ground terrain, but very much care about the tall tower and obstacles. Stay tuned.

ps- I think you'll find iFly GPS works pretty nicely on the towers, we even highlight that specific tower on the screen with a magenta halo that coincides with the audible and textual alert. I hope this helps.

pps- I think we also have it on the list to increase the size of the towers, maybe even have a smaller / larger setting.

I suspected it had to be in there...somewhere. I'm sure a user manual would have directed me to it.

Very nice feature to have. I'll give it a try on my next flight.

Thanks

John

Shane, I could use some help on this matter. I fly an amphibious seaplane (a Searey) and often fly it low--below 200 feet AGL. The terrain alerts drove me nuts, so I disabled them. But now I don't get automatic warnings about obstacles. And obstacles are no joke in a seaplane--especially wires, which are usually invisible and almost always unexpected.

I keep hoping for a "seaplane" mode, or some other way to stay safe and sane. Any suggestions? Or plans? If you need beta testers for that, I'm certainly available, and I know other seaplane pilots with iFlys who are, too.

I actually just re-proposed separating the Terrain and the Obstacles into separate alerts. This way, you could turn off Terrain, but still be alerted of a 2000' tower or such. I'm fairly confident this will be in the next release following the current 9.7 that is in testing. Stay tuned it should be a very quick release.

It's also on the short list that I proposed a few times for Heli-Ports and SeaPorts. I've also initiated conversations with the Seaplane Association to possibly use there "Safe Water database", which is much more exhaustive than the FAA seaport database. This might be a bit farther out due to the current development schedule.
