I'm confused about "ship's power."

The catalog refers to battery power:

"Stratux with Battery and Suction Mount "

What's Included in the Box:

  • Battery Kit
  • Suction Mount

 

Did you deliberately opt to run yours on ship's power instead of battery because you mounted it in a location not easily accessed to change batteries? Or?

You can plug it into a 12v source or hard wire it if you don't want to use a battery. If you use a battery, it's an external battery that your charge by plugging into 110v. My battery last probably 5 hours or more.

I built mine from the component parts, upgrading as new versions came out. I have a USB 5V converter in the lighter socket that powers the Stratux, with the wire running under the instrument panel where the Strautx is zip tied in place. Coax runs to the antenna mounted on an inspection plate on the belly. I feed both receivers in the Stratux from the one antenna via a T-adapter. I don't have a GPS receiver in the Stratux - I use a Garmin Glo to provide GPS to the Samsung tablet. The 740 doesn't need another GPS source, but both the tablet and the 740 share flight plans and get the ADS-B in from the Stratux.

I bought an Astro Link a couple of months ago. It's very nice unit and the AHRS is super fast (14 refreshes a second) and the GPS has been very reliable, where I regularly experience drop outs with my Stratux unit. The battery life on the Astro Link is claimed to be around 5 hours, although I haven't flown long enough to test that claim yet. It does come with a useful android and ios phone app for diving into the settings of the device. 

Overall, I'm very happy with the unit so far and don't have any regrets.
