Hi Walter,

I haven't been on the forum for a while but I see that it is as active as ever. I have a question to resolve in my mind. If I am using the I-Fly app on an I-Pad mini along with a Dual GPS puck, is there any reason to order a 740 to replace my 700? The screen on my 700 has become unusable almost and I thought about replacing the screen or ordering a 740. What does the 740 give me that I don't get on the I-Pad app? If the app gives me all of the same functionality, I don't see a need to order a 740. I am not a frequent user of the I-Fly as I only fly about 55 - 60 hours/year so I don't know everything that it can do, thus I would appreciate all feedback from you and the group. Thanks.

I think the main difference is the brighter screen with a 740 vs a 700 or iPad. I use an iPad Mini 4 and it works well for me in a high wing airplane.

Hi Sam, Great question. The iPad app has pretty much all the same features as the iFly 740. But there are some additional pros to using the 740: The super-bright screen would be the top of the list, this is especially important if you are in a bright cockpit. And with the 740 you won't need to worry about an OS update "breaking" your ability to navigate (this happened last year when Apple accidentally broke all bluetooth GPS interfaces with one of their releases). And the internal GPS in a 740 is awesome, no need for an external receiver. And you can export NMEA data to an autopilot or other device with a 740. Finally, the iPad tends to turn itself off if it gets hot...the iFly 740 won't have that problem.

There are of course pros to the iPad approach too: The big screen is really nice if you have room for it. And it's light, has a good battery, and can be used for lots of other applications.

So hope this helps you choose.

Thanks!
Walter

If I owned my own airplane, I would have both.

I do a fair amount of cross country, some IFR.------I was flying with a 740 and an Ipad Mini with the iFly App. The Ipad screen is terrible, compared to the 740, AND, the Ipad kept letting me down at critical times -- shutting down due to temperature, or locking up. I finally ditched the Ipad and bought a second 740.
