My iPad Mini 4 has never shut down and works very well. I'm sure a 740 is a great device, but so is a newer iPad.

For me, serial NMEA out to autopilot is my primary reason for 740b. Plus convenience of leaving in aircraft so it’s always there.

I use both - the 740 is awesome! I leave the 740 in landscape and the iPad in portrait - one or the other will always show me what's ahead regardless of which direction I'm flying. The 740 is always visible, the iPad is hard to read at times - in a Cessna 182. The iPad is used by the co-pilot to get airport details and frequencies for me, I navigate by the 740. The iPad gets location from a Garmin Glo, both get ADS-B in from a Stratux. In theory, I should be able to share flight plans via the Stratux Wi-Fi network, but the iPad deosn't play with others since the last Apple update. My Android phone and Windows desktop do share with the 740, so I develop the flight plan on the desktop, share it with the phone, then use the phone to share with the 740. The iPad has to be entered manually. Some day I'm replacing the iPad with an Android tablet - just haven't been pissed enough to do it yet.

I solved the iPad heat issue by mounting a sheet of aluminum between the iPad and the window - It hasn't locked up since.

Having had both a 740 and an Ipad, I can say several good things for having the 740 over the IPad

1) You dont have to have one of those dysfunctional, crappy Apple products.

2) The 740 is incredibly bright compared to the IPad not issues with it washing out in bright light.

3) The 740 has jacked inputs and outputs. You can bring in an external camera, listen to music in flight, and you can output NMEA to devices like Dynon panels or some autpilots with very simple wiring.  And it uses a standard power cord, ot the expensive and delicate lightning connector.

4) You have a removable SD card for data in a 740, nothing removable in an IPad.

I had a 740 (bright screen version)with a FligthBox Stratux in my old plane and loved it.  Everyhting worked perfectly and it fed NAV data right into the HSI fucntion on my Dynons.  But the plane and the 740 both got totalled. In my new plane I put in a 12" Ipad with Foreflight for better visibility from a larger screen (I thought) , having synthetic vision, and to get Canadian charts. Not plannign on flying in Canada again anytime soon. So I just got a Stratus 3 and am converting back to IFly as soon as i can get the communication bugs out, and dumping the Foreflight ASAP.  As soon as i can find something about the same size with a brighter screen, I am going to ditch the 12" IPad as well.  Horrible wash out in bright sunlight and it's an Apple product - what mroe to say.

My hand was recently forced to go with an iPad Mini on the yoke in place of the 740.  The reason was because I installed an Avidyne IFD440, and Avidyne has a free iPad app that gives you control of the panel IFD, plus gives you a 2nd instance of an IFD, complete with approaches, changing radio freqs, etc.  They don't offer an Android app version.

Unfortunately, I've learned not to depend on the iPad.  On 3 recent flights it has overheated and died, and had to be held in the vent flow to revive it (The Android on the copilot side soldiered on).  The 740 was bulletproof for several years, whereas the iPad requires constant attention care and babying.  Somebody needs to pass me the IStuff Koolaid, 'cuz I ain't feeling it.
