OK I'm confused. If you are not ADS-B out, (or you're not in the "donut" of a plane that is) how are you receiving traffic (TIS-B)?

I have been using a Dual XGPS170 for about a year now. I'm only used to seeing sporadic traffic. So I still use my PCAS in addition to iFLY. In fact, my main reason for having the XGPS170 is weather, not traffic. I live in thunderstorm country!

=======

I bought (and built) the Stratux primarily for wx too. (I also live in TRW country. Too bad the season is coming to an end, now that I'm equipped.) But any traffic it shows is a bonus.

As for PCAS - it should be possible for some smart person to write code that also does PCAS for the Stratux. They already have a 2nd dongle receiving 1090. So "all" that someone has to do is work out 1/r^2 for the signal strength of traffic (assume a 150 W PEP xponder for off freq and age degraded GA cavitrons) and work out the Mode C info, a la the Monroy ATD-300 or Zaon units.

I plan to post this request in the reddit feed someday.

"With only ADS-B in, you only see traffic that is broadcasting with ADS-B out on your specific frequency 978 or 1090. You do not receive traffic being broadcast by the ground stations unless you intercept the signal being broadcast from the ground station to a nearby airplane with ADS-B out which has activated the ground station. This is why ADS-B in is almost useless for traffic if you don't also have ADS-B out."

The information below comes from a 3/31/2015 FAA paper. If I am reading this incorrectly please correct me, but it appears to me that complete traffic info will be available to all ADS-B in receivers soon:

David

"FAA Changes to the TIS-B service in late 2015 and early 2016
TIS-B Target Status logic will be modified to uplink TIS-B messages for ADS-B NPE aircraft as soon as
possible; this is currently planned for operational rollout by the end of 2015. Though this may result in ghosting
of some NPE targets for uncertified ADS-B-In systems, it will address the immediate safety concern.
Manufacturers of uncertified ADS-B-In systems have over a year to modify their systems appropriately to avoid
ghosting.

TIS-B/ADS-R Client Status logic will be modified to only provide TIS-B/ADS-R client status to aircraft
broadcasting ADS-B with NACp>4, NACv>0, SDA>0, SIL>0, and NIC>4. These criteria are aligned with the
requirements of TSO-C199 and should remove the incentives for NPE use. Establishing a consistent FAA
performance “floor” for ADS-B systems will make more efficient and appropriate use of aeronautical protected
spectrum. FAA will make this TIS-B/ADS-R Client Status change effective on or after 4-Jan-2016, allowing more
than one year for industry to modify their uncertified products and notify customers appropriately.
The results of these changes will be:
(1) All ADS-B-In systems will see other aircraft equipped with ADS-B Out and transponders in areas with
FAA radar/WAM coverage (complete & accurate traffic picture)
(2) Compared to the current state, aeronautical protected spectrum will be more efficiently used
(3) FAA will eliminate the current incentive for operators to equip with ADS-B Out systems that are not
compatible with certified ADS-B-In systems"

No. Effective 1/4/16, non-certified ADS-B out devices will no longer trigger the ground stations. I had to send my SkyGuard transceiver back to have it upgraded with a new GPS and software update to be compliant with the new FAA requirements effective 1/4/16.

Lots of flying this past weekend with a stratux dual band alongside a SkyRadar dual band. Impressed with the stratux; it performed as well as the SkyRadar when it performed. Had occasional issues with radar returns looking like they had been thru a shredder and every other shred was missing, but then the SkyRadar had the same issue occasionally. I noticed that both units create their Wi-Fi network on channel 1, so there was probably lots of collisions going on and causing problems. I'm going to snoop thru the stratux configs to see if the frequency can be changed. The Android lost connection to the stratux quite a bit; usually reconnecting on its on but not always. Weather and traffic seemed comparable from the two devices, with the stratux possibly seeing more traffic. There's already a new beta out that I haven't loaded yet. And I want to add a GPS & AHRS chip to the stratux so the comparison is more apples to apples. Someone requested a link to info about which hardware name to choose; this link says Freeflight in the steps at the top.

https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/3g7urb/the_11390_adsb_receiver_for_foreflight_or_pretty/

However, one time I connected the 740 to the stratux and forgot to switch it from SkyRadar to Freeflight. When I went to the "Devices" screen, it was collecting data. Other times, I had to select Freeflight.

Some of my issues may have been collision related, and some may be because I was powering the two radios off the pi instead of a separate powered USB hub. I'm looking for a 12v hub to use to eliminate that potential problem.

Here's my setup. The bands hold together the pi and the (unpowered) hub. Antennas not shown.

I might add that the Crown Royal bag makes the perfect carrying case; if only they weren't soooo expensive!

Did v0.3b3 break iFly connectivity? I tried it today - iFly doesn't recognize it. I tried all the listed devices. No joy. Had to go back to v.0.2. Just me or are others getting this too?
