I've created a 1" ball RAM mount for the iFly. Takes about 20 minutes.

1st start with the parts:

  • Left - Right: 1/4"x1" rubber washer - $1.27 for 2
  • McMaster 1/4"-20 thumbscrews - $8.94 for 10 pack (part # 93886A140)
  • 1/4"-20 x 2" carriage bolt - $0.15
  • RAM Mount female 1/4"-20 1" ball - $8.45 (part # RAM-B-337U)

The 2" bolt was really too long. 1.75" would have been better, but they didn't have those. So I cut off about 1/4" of the thread. Then I Dremeled down the top and the squared off the sides:

Put is all together and you get:

And here it is hanging on my window (I just haven't gotten over to the plane) but now my mounting options are better:

UPDATE: I took it over and experimented with mounting positions on the plan. With this ball I can actaully mount it on the yoke in front of the ram horns. It would still be better if we could change the orientation to portrait.

Anyway, I found that the mount wasn't quite stable where it attaches to the iFly. This is due to the smaller size of the thumbnuts and the rubber washer. To resolve this I put a 1" fender washer between the rubber washer and the thumb nut. That fixed it. Now it locks down very tightly.

Thanks for the post. I purchased the mount for the 696 since I thought that the flat backing plate would be useful to help support the unit. However the mounting holes are 3/16 and at the top and bottom and not center. I have not decided if I should just buy the ball and a longer center section and try that. I mounted mine on the passenger yoke. Had a little glare and could not get the exact angle I wanted, but it worked. I am thinking that I might buy the longer extension and the ball and try to put it between the two yokes off the passenger yoke.

Lawrence,

Is the shoulder on the 1/4" lag bolt sufficient to catch the sides of the keyhole on the display housing? With a 3/16" bolt, the display spins on the bolt even if tightened down pretty tightly. I thought about putting a small piece of velcro on the bracket to keep the display from spinning but wondered if the 1/4" would be a better option.

Thanks
