DJ67 acknowledge this in his original post, but that only works if you have the map following your ownship, and he indicated that is not always his use case:  "I know I can slide the whole map around but after the peeking is over, the map doesn't necessarily go back to where it was unless I had it centered before."

If you move the map more than a few pixels, you can tap the bullseye to put things back where they were.

Pressing the bullseye always returns the map to following your ownship.  If you have the map offset from following your ownship for some reason, like the OP said he sometimes does, then pressing the bullseye will not return things to where they were.
