Thinking about this a little more, I'm not sure I agree this is really a problem. The OP says, "I can move the map, but it doesn't return to where it was unless it was centered." A couple of thoughts about that:
1) In certain map modes, iFly already acts almost like I suggested. Instead of the instruments fading when the map is touched, they disappear when the map is moved--even a pixel or two. If you're using anything other than Vector map mode, then the map is fully visible when you move touch-drag to move it. And if you only move the map a couple of pixels, then it will snap back to where it was when you let go. So this is a "perfect" solution.
2) In Vector map mode, the map itself partially declutters while being dragged, so this doesn't have a "perfect" solution. However, I think there are reasonable techniques to do what you need. Here are two: a) Identify some clearly visible mark on the map that is in an obvious location (a town near the edge of the screen; a label that is lined up adjacent to an instrument, etc.). Touch-drag the map enough to reveal the map area that is obscured, inspect the area of interest, then move the map back to return the previously-identified mark to its original location. b) Anchor your hand to the device, fully extend a finger or thumb out towards the middle of the screen, then swipe back all the way to the edge of the screen in the direction needed to reveal the area of interest (or start at the edge and move toward the center), then let go. When viewing is complete, reverse the touch-drag motion to return the map back to where it was. (The point of this technique is to use a defined, easy-to-repeat motion to make it easy to put the map back where it started from.)
Are these techniques really not acceptable for your use case? They're a lot simpler than many of the suggestions offered for a solution.
#1 is the really the right answer. Your initial suggestion in the very first reply, to wit ... "What if when you touch the map, all the buttons and instruments go partly transparent? Or would that be too weird/distracting?" ... seemed like an okay idea. And, as you have just pointed out, it already exists. Which was happening in front of my face and I didn't realize it.
So problem solved, wish list item not needed.
Maybe we should archive this one in General Discussion.
BTW I did some testing in full page map Low Enroute and everything disappears as you said except the mini-EFIS Instrument, the contents of which actually follows the map movement. It also worked for me in Vector with the default set of instruments.
