Walter,
After I updated to 5.14 I am having trouble with the GPS locking up while flying cross country.I had a flight plan that I was following then deviated about 20 miles off course without changing my flight plan. The IFly locked up and would not respond to anything until I turned it off for about 5 minutes. I am also having trouble if I search for airport information. After I search about 2 airports it will not bring up any more searches, it just shows the hourglass turning in the center of the screen.
Thanks
Ken

Ken,

If this happens again reboot the iFly, it should immediately start working again (you shouldn't need to wait 5 minutes). That being said...of course we don't want this to ever happen, especially while in flight. We recently discovered a problem with the low-enroute charts, the specific compression algorithm we were using doesn't seem to be properly supported by our decompression library, so after panning around on those charts for a while the system could become unstable and have this sort of behavior, or it could lock up. The latest set of low-enroute charts does not have this problem. Is it possible this was the source of your problems?

Thanks!
Walter

Before flying with it, I played with the unit for several weeks in the house. I managed to get it to lockup ONE time, but one time is once too many! I don't attribute the problem to the iFly software, but rather to Windows --- My simple mind just said to me "You're expecting too much from Windows" and I left it at that. Considering that there is no on-off hardware button, I changed the power source from the master buss to the avionics buss. Testing has proven that I can simply cycle the avionics master and get the iFly to restore within seconds. The momentary loss of power to my radios and nav. equipment isn't problematic - not being able to restore my GPS while in-flight is!

As an aside, I would suggest that anybody flying with sophisticated devices such as the iFly, AND ETC., always have the panel capability to kill/restart the device. In the instance of the iFly, a method to interrupt the power is mandatory. Anybody considering the battery pack as an option should keep this in mind. Any device that lacks its own power button should be wired through a switch. It is just common sense.

The power plug from the iFly is removable near the lower right corner of the bezel. If you use the cigarette lighter adapter, the adapter plug is removable from the lighter socket. Unless you mount the device in a way that restricts access to that bezel connector AND hard-wire the power source into ship's power without a pull-breaker or switch, cycling power to the device should not be a problem.

When I got my iFly I also ordered the Battery Pak for it, and it does come with an on/off switch right in the pak.. I have used the pak to see how long it would last and I can get 3+ hrs out of it.
