I've been cruising the AP forums and there is conflicting and confusing information about whether it is adviseable to simply "pull the plug" to turn off a Stratux or whether it should have a "soft" shutdown via a software command which I believe is now available on the latest iteration of iFly software.

"Pulling the plug" has been alleged to cause Stratux software and/or card corruption, etc. However, I had also heard that Chris Young, the developer of Stratux, routinely "pulls the plug" during the thousands of Stratux development cycles and says it is not a problem. I was concerned because I remotely mounted my Stratux (it is not accessible from the pilot's seat) to replace my NavWorx box and power it via a 3A/5V UBEC wired to my avionics master. I routinely "pull the plug" by shutting down my avionics master and have had no problems. I recently was corresponding with Chris and asked him about the conflicting advice. Here's his email response to me (emphasis mine):

Hi John,

It's fine to pull the plug. Earlier Pis (Raspberry Pi 1) had issues with SD card corruption, so this idea that one must safely shut down the Pi is pretty well ingrained for many people. With the Pi3 and a decent quality SD card, there should not be a problem.

I don't really encourage users to do a "safe shutdown". The main reason is that some battery packs actually do the opposite. You shut down the unit via software, the power consumption goes to zero, the battery pack shuts down. After a few seconds, the battery pack "forgets" and senses a load is connected, then re-starts the unit!

Hope that helps,

Chris

So there you have it from whom I consider the single most authoritative source for Stratux information!

John -
I very much appreciate you posting your findings. Like many others, I too just remove power to my Stratux receiver without using any software shutdown commands and haven't experienced any problems/corrupted files. Should this change in the future, I will use this thread to update my results, as I hope others users will also do. Great info - well done!

If your Stratux SD card becomes corrupted, this thread won't help. You will need to reflash the card or purchase a new one that has already been flashed with the Stratux software. I suggest you shut down the program properly or make a backup SD card.

Good suggestion on making a back-up SD card, Johnny! You're right - this thread won't help me if my card does get corrupted but it will keep others advised, including Chris Young, the Stratux software developer who doesn't recommend the software shutdown.

We know who Chris is. Several people here have corrupted their SD cards by unplugging the Stratux. I have never had that problem.

EDIT: I think it's probably the same reason you don't just switch off the power to your computer. You exit a computer properly and shut-down properly to prevent corrupting files and operating systems.

It's an issue we hear about pretty much every day, but that's out of thousands of pilots flying Stratuxs.

I think it's a matter of threat modeling. For someone who has used Etcher to flash a card before and is comfortable doing so again, the risk is relatively low and the fix is easy. A backup card is also easy to make and keep handy.

If you don't have the necessary hardware, or technical experience, or just like to minimize your risk, a clean shutdown takes seconds since iFly 10.2 (Menu -> Exit Application -> Shutdown Stratux).

I usually pull power on my Stratux, and have never had an issue... until this morning. I'm typing this as Etcher re-flashes my card.
