Perhaps this is old news to everyone but me, but Google has quietly discontinued the incredibly popular Nexus 7. They new offer android pads that are both smaller and larger than 7 inches, and now seem to be asking more Apple-like prices for those models.

Myself, I consider the 7" format to be perfect for the planes that I fly. My wife's 10" I-pad is too big, and (for my eyes anyhow) a phone-size device is too small. I'm happy to stick with 7 inch units.

My feeling is that for applications like IFly, you should have a popular device. Using the same hardware that everybody else is using is the best way to ensure that you don't get waylaid by some strange issue when you least expect it.

So I found brand new second generation Nexus-7's on Amazon for less than I paid for my first generation unit. I bought one "while the getting is good". So I'm set for the next couple years anyhow.

Vaughn,

They recently introduced the new Nexus 9 and Nexus 6. While they have discontinued selling the Nexus 7, they most definitely will continue to support it. They made a commitment early on the provide support and forward compatibility with newer Android versions. I would be shocked it they stop updating the firmware anytime soon. I would not worry about this anytime soon. That second generation Nexus 7 is a great tablet with one of the brighter screens on the android market.

We have already heard and confirmed that the iFly GPS app works on the new Nexus 9 with Android 5.0 Lollipop. It's our understanding that iFly GPS is one of the only Aviation Moving Map Apps currently working on the new device and platform. There should not be a concern about moving to the new Nexus 9 or v5.0 Lollipop OS. I hope this eases some minds.

Shane,

I have the Nexus 7 (2013) and just installed Android v5.0 Lollipop (LRX21P). With Android 4.4.4 I have no problems running iFly GPS, but with v5.0 the iFly GPS app freezes after approx 15 minutes. I've tried the Play Store version and the beta version with the same results.

I started the app and did nothing for 20 min and it didn't freeze. Then I moved the map and recentered on the plane, the app froze 4 min later. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing in the app, the iFly app freezes and the OS will tell me it's not responding and do I want to close it. It closes and when I restart the app get the same results.

Got it off xda developers site under

Google Nexus 7 (2013) Android Development.

So far everything I do on the tablet works great except for the iFly GPS app. It seems no matter what I do, the app freezes between 15 and 20 minutes after startup. Hoping somebody else will try it.
