Recently did an update on my iFly720 SDcard.

There were several sectionals needing updating, plus update of software from 8.2 to 8.3 (IIRR).

It look a not unexpected roughly 10 minutes for the full download.

Figuring I'd better also check the iPad for updates. Sure enough on the update view it showed a few states needing updating (colored orange.) But when I let it update (on same WiFi network as I updated the 720) it took only a small raction of the time the 720 update took. And although I wasn't watching it during the whole download it seemed to me it was only updating airport information.

Can you explain the difference?

Incidentally (or maybe not incidentally) the iFly app on my Mini is still on version 8.2.44 and, oddly and incorrectly IMO, reports the subscription expired 6/01/2012.

That is, does iFly ipad automatically update sectionals (assuming it has internet connectivity)?

i believe it does automatically update TFRs and weather... And I vaguely recall giving it permission to do push updates or downloads.
