Yes, this might also be an option.
Both of my iPads have a build-in GPS: If the GPS reception of their integrated GPSs is acceptable, I could possibly even get the Flightbox without the external GPS.
I also sent another e-mail to Dual, they told me that they apparently have a new beta firmware available. Let's see how this goes.

Personally, I feel the added safety aspect of ADS-B out is worth the price of the SkyGuard transceiver.

Agreed. This is why we are actually planning to add ADS-B out to our plane next winter.
