I experienced an iPad mini heat shut down a couple of times. I use a RAM mount to hold it in the right side corner of the wind shield of the C182. I made a heat shield of .025 aluminum about a ¼" larger all around than the iPad and mounted it between the iPad snap-in mount and the RAM mount ball. I haven't had a heat related shut down since then, but we haven't had any 100F + days yet the summer either.

Yes, the iPad is the back-up to the 720, also usefull for the co-pilot to look up frequencies, etc. while I keep on the magenta line.

Lots of useful things an unofficial copilot can do with the ifly iPad...and many other things...even if they have no skill or inclination to fly the plane.

Took quite a while for my wife..who loves to be flying in the plane but has little interest in piloting it...to really understand. She thought I was just encouraging her to learn iFly, etc., out of being a technophile.
Then she sat in on a pilot seminar on "single pilot resource management" and heard from the speaker the value of tasks pilot can offload to passenger in normal and challenging situations, and got enthused about learning and doing more in the cockpit.

I'd been saying the same for years.
Reminds me of the saying
"A prophet is without honor in his own village. 😉

Curious.... How many of you have a spouse who is nkt s pilot but active,y participates in cockpit task management ?
How many not-so-much?

I was s bit puzzled about why Aople publishes an altitude liming on ioads.

Here's the most credible explanation I found :

"It's because of the battery. The battery relies on ambient air to keep itself at a stable temperature. Too low of an air pressure results in less air cooling the battery, even if the air around it is colder. This won't have any drastic effects on the battery but could decrease its overall lifespan.."

That said there are scattered reports of iPads operation over 10,000 with no obvious problems.
One report of user saying it clearly got hotter at altitude.

I always understood the 10K limitation on computers to be due to their use of spinning HDD's. The head of the drive apparently rides on a cushion of air, and above 10K the reduced air reduces the air cushion enough that damage to the HDD can result. Now I have no idea if iPads, iPhones, or other tables have spinning HDD's or SS HDD's. If they're SS, i would imagine the altitude wouldn't affect them.

Tablets don't have spinning hard drives.
