Had iPad mini with iFly on lap during a cross counrty.

Suddenly it went black.
When I tried to revive it it said ...not exact words ... "Over heated. Put in cool place and wait."
Took it off my lap were sun was hitting it.
About 20min later came alive again.

Wasn't too concerned as I was only using it as a backup go my iFly 720.

But because I was in unknown territory , if it HAD been my only GPS would have been very disturbing ...even quite dangerous.

And FWIW... Officially IIRR iPads do not promise they wiil work above 10,000 feet, BTW.

That could have been very concerning under the right circumstances... I Do Not carry 'backup' charts but between the 720 and my iPad AND iPhone plus normally an on board GPS, I feel pretty comfortable. iPad at +10,000: Would Oxygen help?

Try the new iFly 740, I had it laying on the glareshield and I could barely touch it, it was so hot. This is definately not recomended, but it still worked like a charm. There is a difference between consumer tablets and a dedicated GPS like the iFly 720/740, etc. Just have a backup plan if you are using the iPad is the key.

Shane,
I now own the 740. Love it.
It's our main GPS. The iPad is backup and supplement .

This was a heads up on the heat shutdown issue on iPad ...particularly for those flying with it as their only GPS.

Suggests making effort to keep it it of the sun if possible...especially in summer ..

Alex,

No worries, I just want to make sure others know that the iFly 740 does not have the "overheating" issues that the iPads have. You've got a great combo, iFly 740 as main and iPad as backup. Thanks for the help telling others.
