Just upgraded to the 720 from the 700 to use the wireless ADS-B receiver . I went with the Clarity because of it's size and the small glare shield space on my Thorp S-18 . I "hooked" up both units in the office and got the WiFi connection established . Received some TAF/Metar data from some local airports in San Diego . The intent was to use both units for my flight from KSEE to KOSH (Air Adventure 2013) . Leaving KSEE the ADS-B was showing traffic and WX...GREAT ! Got to KCGZ and got fuel . Leaving KCGZ got some great WX returns and all was well with the world . So far I have about 2.0 hours of useful data from both units . Just past KCGZ I began to get constant "ALERT" messages on the 720 . The ADS-B had lost the "link" or another msg stated data lost ? I checked the WiFI connection and it was still established . Long story short from that point on to OSH and then from OSH back to KSEE I got no useful data from the Clarity/720 . Only constant "Alert" messages saying "no link" , "no data" . The Clarity was still connected to the 720 . So out of 25 hours of flight time I only got about 2 hours of useful information from the 2 units . As a side note the 720 display "froze up" 3 times during the trip to OSH . I had to remove power and reboot the unit . The most exciting time was when I was arriving at "Ripon" only to find the display had frozen several miles back !

I contacted Clarity about this problem and they stated it may be due to certain iFly S/N units. I gave her my Serial number for the 720 and her reply was that iFly was aware that there was a WiFi connect problem and she forwarded all of our E-mails to iFly for trouble shooting .

iFly can you elaborate on this problem ? I spent extra to upgrade to the 720 to use the Clarity . Right now I have a $1,200 ADS-B paper weight . Thank you .

Rich,

At this time we are still working on the Clarity issue, it is two part. Sagetech uses a peer-to-peer wireless protocol, and out 720 will connect, however it does not like that protocol to well. It's not optimal for prolonged data transmission nor as stable and widely supported as the Wireless Access Point or LAN setup.

We've made notes and worked with Clarity to qualify iFly 720 owners, noting that the FL11 batch of serial numbers is the only ones confirmed to work consistently. The FL12 and FL13 are inconsistent. With that said, we are working on a optional Wi-Fi solution, that may resolve this connection disconnect.

I can't confirm just yet that a fix will be made, however this is why we've agreed with Clarity to qualify the serial number of the 720 for best practice. The Clarity is about the only WI-Fi ADS-B unit we are having issues with. We can work with the iLevil, SkyRadar, NavWorx, SkyGuardTWX, etc, as they all use the Wi-Fi Lan Access point protocol.

If Clarity would provide a firmware update to change the protocol, the iFly would most likely work, however they are not open to that fix. Therefore, we are looking at an alternative option, however since we are functioning with the majority of other units, there are other options. This is something we are taking very serious as we want a resolution, however we wish it was a mutual resolution and not just one-sided.

It's your call to return your Clarity and try the iLevil or SkyGuardTWX, known to work with the iFly and both have the AHRS as well, with the SkyGuardTWX, it is larger, but it is also an ADS-B out so you get full ADS-B traffic. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. $1399 is a lot to hold onto without a confirmed fix in place. I hope this helps.

Greetings Rich,

First, I am in no way affiliated with iFly or Sagetech. Now, with that disclaimer out of the way, I purchased a Sagetech early on in their development cycle and took posession of my system earlier this year. While I liked the compactness and operation I could not make the system work with my iFly 720. I had many email conversations with Sagetech and tried every suggestion they had, without sucess. Finally, I threw in the towel and sent it back for refund.

I purchased the iLevil SW and it works perfectly! No connection issues, no rebooting issues, just what I had hoped for.

There are a few other iFly owners who had similar experiences with Clarity SV's so you are not alone.

Enough said, I can not stress how well Adventure Pilot works with us and resolves everything they can. Walter, Shane and the crew really ROCK!

Hope this helps......

Paul : I had about a 20 minute discussion with Shane regarding the 720 and the Clarity . When I first began looking at the ADS-B units the Clarity looked to be a good choice due to its size . However at the time (a long time ago) they were still having problems with R & D and kept delaying an intro date. I also was watching iFly and they were monitoring the Clarity issue saying only a few more months until a roll out of the unit . I monitored both sites and no mention of a Serial number issue . In fact at the time both sites stated each unit was good to go so I pulled the trigger and bought both units . Now it appears there is a SN issue with the 720 and the Clarity . If you have a 720 with a FL11 SN there appears to be no problems , but when I bought my 720 I did not know I needed an FL11 SN model ? I thought a 720 was a 720 ? The serial number issue popped up when I contacted Clarity by E-mail and they wanted my SN . They said it was a SN/WiFi issue ? How would I know that ? Long story short Shane was VERY helpful and gave me some useful info .

As a side note last nite I powered up the iFly 720 and the Clarity in the home office (just as I did during the initial out of the box test drive) and both units connected and worked as advertised and I was getting NexRad and weather in the office , but after about 15-20 minutes I lost the connection ? The Clarity was very hot ! I turned the Clarity off and after about 5 minutes turned it back on and both units were connected again . The Clarity was still very hot ! As an experiment I took a cold gel pack out of the freezer and placed it under the Clarity and let the unit cool down . After a few minutes I powered up the Clarity (nice and cold now) and still after 15-20 minutes I lost the connection . After the 3rd attempt I turned everything off and called it a nite . I can not see how any electronics can stand that kind of generated heat and not fail ? They gave me a heat shield to cover the unit from the sun (will not work on the Thorp due to the windshield slope ) and they also have a solar powered fan (another $45.00) to cool the unit which tells me they have a serious heat problem .

I will contact Clarity next week and explain the situation and hopefully get a refund ? I hope they will be as helpful as the iFly team has been ! Talking with Shane I think they are going to publish unless you have an iFly720 SN FL11 (I have the 720 SN FL13 ) then you might have problems with the Clarity .

Thanks again for the info and help Shane ! Keep your airspeed up and watch your six ! Remember a #2 pencil and a 50 cent Sectional is your second best friend !

Regards,

Rich
