I looked at the SkyGuard TWX while at Osh last week and was impressed with its performance. However, I think the packaging is somewhat "klunky". I talked to the developer while he was at the Ifly booth and suggested that he look into a window mount similar to the Stratus 2. He said he hadn't even thought about it but was going to look into that option. I don't like to have the clunky box mounted on the dash of my 180 with its antennae etc hanging off of it. I still think the market is young so I plan to hold off trying another device (I tried the Clarity) while the new guys get their products developed. I prefer that the ads-b device also include AHRS which added another $400 to the SkyGuard price. I wish Walter et al could break the code so the STratus 2 worked with Ifly. My lady friend was with me at Osh using her Ipad and Stratus 2...the Stratus is bulletproof...completely plug and play...we saw weather, traffic and AHRS...only problem is that I am an Ifly guy, not an Ipad person

Dogbreath: I know what you mean by having an uncluttered glare shield, so I did some tests with my GPSs and SkyGuard to see how well the combo would work if I took the SkyGuard off the glareshield and located it in the empennage - I have a fabric covered aircraft. The GPSs locked right up with WAAS signal strength. What amazed me was that the SkyGuard WiFi came through like gangbusters. I had it all buttoned up in the empennage and could still pick up the WiFi signal 5-by-5 from 30 feet away outside the airplane. Eventually that is where it is going to get mounted. ===Ralph

I purchased the ILevil at OSH, it is much smaller and has a solar charger that helps. Shane said that it is a good unit for weather not as good as the Skyguard for traffic as is does not have a dual frequency tranciever. Although, I did pick up a lot of traffic coming out of OSH. I got METARS, TAFs and NEXRAD, when I picked up ADS B on my trip home to the NW, the coverage across the north is weak but much better in western washington.

Stephen,

I'm sorry for any misunderstanding at the show. ADS-B receivers in general are great for weather and less inclusive of Traffic than a Transceiver. Have a dual band vs. a single band receiver will get you similar traffic while at altitude and linked to the ground TIS-B broadcast, provided a ADS-B out or Transceiver craft has woken up the tower broadcast.

The major benefit of a Transceiver is that it will send out the signal to wake up the Ground TIS-B broadcast for traffic. The ground broadcast actually has both the 978 and 1090ES in it as ATC is merging the data and pumping it out on the TIS-B ground signal.

The Dual Band receivers will help with the Air-to-Air traffic as it would receiver air-to-air signals from both the 978 and the 1090ES, but keep in mind most of the 1090ES is going to be over FL18. I hope this helps a little bit.

Shane,

I saw Ralph's comments about placing the SkyGuard system in another location other than the windscreen. Have you all tested any other locations in aircraft? I'm thinking I'd like to mount the SkyGuard in the baggage compartment of my Cherokee as I have the third windown option and it should have a view of the sky. Has anyone else tried that location?
