ForeFlight and FltPlan.com have commercial license agreements with Nav Canada for electronic vfr and ifr charts. Why hasn't Adventure Pilot signed a license agreement with Nav Canada similar to the ForeFlight agreement?

Hi floatplaneflyer,

Foreflight has ifr low/high and non-georeferenced plates for Canada, for an additional $150/yr. I don't believe they have any VFR charts. We are considering working with NavCanada, and we are also pursuing other avenues to provide additional support for Canada in the iFly GPS.

Thanks,

Walter

Walter and others interested.....

the deal Foreflight has with NavCanada is as crazy as the rest of aviation services here.

90% of General aviation is guys who fly from their little town to a big city or fly-in, or from their big city airport to a little airstrip, all within a 500 mile radius....with the occasional trip to a neighbouring province.

What we need is a $20 digital chart for our home province, or maybe two, south of the 60th parallel....not a $150 annual subscription to 9 million square miles of data that we will never see.

IF you can somehow find other data that will be useful in getting from A to B safely, I'm all for it. I haven't seen the digital VNC charts, but the paper ones were almost unreadable, with all the bold purple print, and airways and contours in mountainous terrain.

Perry,

That is exactly what we are working on. We've purchased the International Database that includes Canada. We'll be adding higher resolution geographic data, airport details, much more relevant VFR and some IFR information for Canada along with other countries.

We want to build our own charts using official data that you can use in a much more cleaner layout and easier to read format. The problem is Nav Canada has a copyright on the charts so unless they accept an offer I proposed to them, we can't use them unless we pay exorbitant license fees for them. Stay Tuned.

According to Nav Canada, you still need the CFS or the Paper chart, though I suspect this might be changing. I hope this helps.
