Hi all,

I have been looking at the two units and trying to decide between them. From looking at the website, I gather the following.

720: Tolerates direct sunlight, internal battery, uses wifi to update and maybe conect to external units, has streets included in price.

700: Less expensive.

Is this about it, am I missing something important?

Thanks much for any information.

Cheers

Geoff

To be clear, the "internal battery" for the 720 is sized to allow the unit to survive brief (~5ish seconds) power outages, as opposed to the 700 which can reset from a power glitch lasting only a few milliseconds.

Also, the 720's wi-fi does, in fact, allow it to connect to external devices (specifically, the Skyradar ADSB receiver).

Finally, the 720 does have a somewhat faster internal processor and more internal memory, which may eventually allow it to support more features/capabilities than the 700 (though as of today, that is not the case).

Thank you very much. Has anyone seen them side by side in sunlight? Is there really much difference? I fly in a bubble canopy plane, and sunlight is definetly a factor.

Thanks

Geoff

Geoff,

I upgraded from the 700 to the 720 and my experience is that the 720 is superior. Definately (to me) worth the difference in money for the brightness and also for the many extra features and speed. You may also find the "Vector" mode, which clears the screen of most of the chart background leaving only the essentials like airspace, flight path, etc., will make it even easier to read in bright sunlight. I seem to remember a hood is also availiable for the unit, but if not it would be easy to make one.

I got by with my 700 (Liberty XL2 - almost a bubble canopy). If you can afford it the 720 is definitely the way to go - the 700 is a very good unit but the 720 is noticeably superior in a bright cockpit.

Not enough room to test side by side but I did swap them in-flight. In direct sunlight the difference is big. You'll still get washout on the 720 if the sun is just right but it's very good 95% of the time as where the 700 (without hood or other aids) was more like 75%.

The wireless updates and connectivity (now that they are fully functional) is very, very nice and makes keeping your data up to date a breeze. No downloads to transfer, then update, etc. As long as you have access to a wifi network just plug it in - hit update, and in a few min you are good to go.
