IPads running various aviation apps, are known for shutting down due to temperature. While running iFly with a dual XGPS170, I experienced this one time. Nice Spring day here in the North East with no radar echo’s to display. I was following my progress on the approach plate when just short of the runway I got the iPad message of overtemp.

Has anyone done an analysis of which modes cause the highest operating temperatures? One reason for my question is the future feature of weather on sectional charts. Do more colors displayed cause higher temperatures? Weather on sectionals will be a very dynamic display with moving sectional map details and added weather display.

Personally I like the weather on vector chart display.

Yes, this is possible. As part of an engineering stress test, I did leave it in the airplane for a while before the flight. It was not in direct sun light. I have a knee mount and it was in and out of sunlight during the flight. Flight was short, just 20 minutes. It recovered before I cleared the runway. I have now modified the case with 9 one inch holes to improve cooling. Other pilots on the airport with the larger iPads have had similar problems, sometimes shutting down several times during a flight. I am exploring the limits lof these new things before I take it into IFR. I know others have tried various positions to get better airflow over the iPad. But, I am interested if there is a difference in power generated in the various modes and displays.
