No photos. A story.

I had a BFR today. Naturally, one part of the Review was an Engine Out Emergency. (SEL)

I knew that there was a Glider Port in the area, but for the life of me (perhaps literal someday), I couldn't find it visually or on the chart.

It never occurred to me to use iFly's NRST feature, which would have not only told me where the Port was, but whether I could glide there.

My problem is that I was raised in an era where we didn't have NRST. So it's wasn't part of my basic training - which is what you revert to when the chips are down.

I don't know if, at this late date (40 yrs/10,000 hrs), I can integrate new habits with my old.

But my main purpose in writing is this: If you're a CFI, you might want to teach new students to use the NRST feature in an engine out emergency (after they first aviate) so that this is in their bag of tricks.

That's a really great point...I will try introducing that into my crosscheck more often.

My first reaction would be to look OUTSIDE and not to go use the EFB for a field....so you are not alone in that reflexive response! Training kicks in...it's what we were taught.

Great idea...thanks.
