I'd rather see the resources go into an internal (and replaceable) battery. Design it so you can run ship power to the unit without damaging battery. Another factor is weight. A lighter, and perhaps thinner unit would be more beneficial. This probably means limited battery run times but if you could get at least an hr. it would be sufficient.

The current setup of having the external battery works but is cumbersome. Last thing I would want are more wires running to/from the iFly.

To the Adventure Pilot staff,

A battery that could connect to the back of the existing iFly 700 and 720s and also have a slot for the mount I think would fix some of the problems with the system either freezing or rebooting. In my case, the rebooting was due to a bad power cord. An attached battery should have less problems due to a more positive connection to the system and less likely to have a power interruption. Of course, I'd like to plug in this battery to a 12/24 volt connection in the airplane. If that power cord has a temporary problem, the attached battery would be able to maintain power, however long it could last.

Only problem is the attached battery adds weight, which in turn, makes mounting the unit and keeping it stable all the more difficult. I've had a few issues with my power cord being flaky.....perhaps it's just a matter of better connectors. Either way, a heavier iFly is a step in the wrong direction....(at least for me)

What if a backup battery was built into the mounting hardware for the iFly with a short cord from the mount ot the unit itself. If the battery were removable from the mount this would make it even better.

Just a thought, but it would prevent having to buy every iteration of the ifly unit that comes to market!!

Ah.....you must be one of the lucky ones that doesn't need/use the suction cup mount... :-)

If this were adopted, it would likely mean an iFly specific power supply, and therefore more expensive. It also wouldn't solve several of the problems encountered now with an unpowered iFly. It would be cumbersome to transport the powered iFly to/from your car where you were already using it in the street mode, or so it already has sattellite lock when you get to the aircraft. The iFly would still reboot as a result of power interruptions. The battery to iFly power cord would still be a potential source of power interruptions.

My ideal preference would be an internal battery, good for several hours, as well as an internal battery charger, so it could be plugged into a 5vdc-35vdc power source, and only run on batteries when disconnected. It would seem to me this feature is certainly possible. After all, look at the size of cell phones, smart phones and other electronic gadgets that already have built in, rechargable batteries that last for several hours, in packages much smaller than the iFly.

I would imagine that we are going to have to buy a new version of the iFly, because of the improvements in the computer industry, as well as the many features the iFly team is implementing at our request. If I'm not mistaken there are already things the 720 can do that the 700 can't just because of the difference in hardware capabilities.

Dave,

You are correct I have my ifly mounted on the yoke. I just though if a there was a mount with a built in battery it could receive power from either a hard wired connection or still from the 12 vdc lighter outlet. A short cord from the mount to the ifly would power it. I like your comment about a way to prevent damage to the rechargeable battery as that is a concern I have as well.

I am not sure how this arrangement would require new hardware but I am not going to worry about it. I really don't want to do anything to add weight to the unit itself.

Just my thoughts!!
