With many in Civil Air Patrol, I know 6 in our squadron and at least a dozen or so in our wing with iflys, you could consider adding the search patterns into the system? Specifically Grid, Parallel, Creeping line and Expanding sqaure. These are available in our built in systems and a couple of the ipad apps are now supporting these. It would be great to have them on the ifly too.

Jon, do you know where we can get detailed rules on how these patterns are generated?

The way it's taught to do it manually with sectionals and overlays can be found here
www.nesa.cap.gov/curriculum_material/...
O-2003 explains the grid system.
O-2102 thru O-2105 and O-2109 thru O-2115 gives examples how to plot and fly the searches out.

For a presentation on how this is setup and configured on our apollo gps you can view this slideshow to see the interfaces.

Surprisingly, entering waypoint on the ifly and on the apollo are very similar.

I'm assuming it's ok to post this since a google search of the internet will find all this information:)
If you have any questions, please ask. More then happy to help and would love to see this implemented.

Have there been any further developments with this? I'm a volunteer pilot with CAP and would find this added feature extremely helpful. Thanks. Mike

I fly with NATCAP Wing and the Cessna 172 and 182s have the grids are part of the Garmin 400 and Garmin 1000 systems. Just curious how many CAP airplanes don't already have these search patterns and why you have to use a hand-held GPS, such as the iFly.
