Or get an Android and a car dock. The terrestrial navigation on Android OS (ni Google) is the best I've ever seen. With a HTC or Motorola latest Android no don't need a car gps, iPod, HD video camera, multi-megapixel camera or laptop. Because they do all that stuff (many times better than stand-alone devices). The Android Nav never misses turns or sends you to BFE like Garmin. There is a reason Garmin has been unloading Nuvi's for cheap over the last few months. And with Android the data is updated real-time for free just like Google Maps and Earth, as opposed to Garmin or Tom Tom wanting you to buy an update. I would leave the iFly in the airplane where it belongs.

I think you guys are missing the (at least my) point. I'm not anticipating Walter and his team develop an automotive mode, I'm looking for something that's already out there, made for the WinCE OS that apparently comprises the *other* side of the iFly, available on the internet for free or a reasonable cost. When I fly somewhere and get a rental car, I generally don't leave the GPS in the plane. If I'm going to have it in the car, I'd like to use it as opposed to taking a separate automotive GPS. There are places other than in the windshield to mount an automotive GPS that won't block your view.

Mike,

That is exactly what we're working on. It will be an optional feature: Those that want it can by the "Road Map" SD card. We have started testing some of the different solutions out there. Some of the open source stuff I've tested seems difficult to use and buggy - I don't think that will be a viable route. The common interfaces, such as TomTom, are a bit expensive, but seem to work great. I'm trying to keep the one-time cost to around $50, but might be as high as $100.

Looks like they don't have a Win CE version of their app...

We will work with a 3rd party to get an automotive mode working on the device, and then we will make that available as an optional feature. We don't have a date yet for that; more to come when able.

Thanks,

Walter,

Just thinking about possible Civil Air Patrol usage of an additional map layer but not an automotive mode. Usually, the automotive mode tries to place the car on a road but I would like, for a CAP mission to coordinate with a ground team, just to switch to a geo-referenced road map when we are flying. This would be another choice like the sectional or low altitude IFR charts.

I'm not saying that the automotive mode wouldn't be useful but I am more interested in the iFly 700 for aviation uses.

This feature could open up some more customers.
