The 720 has definitely got a bright screen. As such I usually keep the daytime settings at 4 dots, sometimes 3 on a cloudy day. For nitetime I have it at 2 dots. I select the option to have the unit enable nite mode with the default times of 7p-7a. This is all set in the ifly/CE settings. Everything looks fine. Then when using the navigation app things change and my settings get all messed up. What I've discovered is there are two independent controls loosely joined here in what produces undesirable results.
First, there's there CE "settings" for day and nite brightness. This works fine. I will refer to these as "settings"
Second, there's the navaigation app which has "modes" for day and nite. This isn't working so well. I will refer to these as "modes". The modes changes the color scheme for better day or nite use AND also changes the defined brightness settings to 1 dot for nite and 5 dots for day. Which causes the problems.
When changing modes in the navigation app the current setting is also changed. So now when I'm in day setting and I switch to nite mode, my day settings get changed to 1 dot and the screen is dimmed. Same happens if the time is after 7p and the device is in nite settings and I change the app to day mode, my settings get messed up and nite is now set for the brightest setting of 5 dots. Essentially the device is now operating in reverse! Day setting is configured for 1 dot and nite setting is configured for 5 dots!
The easiest and simplest solution(i.e. code can be removed!) is to just not mess with the CE settings when the navigation app mode is changed. The mode should just control the appropriate color schemes. In addition there is also a setting in the navigation app the can adjust the brightness if desired. This would work ok as the device settings would control the brightness.
A second more ideal solution would be similar to how istreets and tomtoms work. The color schemes AND settings are automatic based on the gps information. The brightness settings would be selected by the GPS, but not changed from what the user has defined. Again the mode does not affect the settings.
A third possibility is a manual option to the second solution. Have the mode also select the setting, but not change the defined value.
In all three options the settings can be adjusted by the already existing option for brightness in the navigation app if needed. So during the day in day mode if it's cloudy, I can change the brightness setting to 3 dots in desired.
