Today I received FAA approval for a global AMOC (alternative means of compliance) to disable the ADS600-EXP's transmitter and continue to use it as a receiver.  Obviously, this is only attractive to those just wanting an ADS-B receiver or those with a ADS-B out only UAT such as the uAvionix skyBeacon.  I've posted the details in a blog:  http://www.zenith.aero/profiles/blogs...f-compliance-di

During testing, it worked great with my iFly 740.  However, I would caution anyone performing this AMOC to carefully test for possible interference with all other electronic devices on board the aircraft!

I contacted the FAA (Kyle Cobble) last month about the same possibility of continuing to use my NavWorx ADS600-B.  They suggested I apply for an AMOC to allow continuing use of the receiver function.  Your explanation of how to configure the ADS600 is a great help.   I am planning to install a Garmin GDL-82 to provide a certified ADS-B out capability.  I think that should restore the full functionality the ADS600-B receiver section and wifi connection to my Samsung Tablet that I use for iFlyGPS.

Well ... bummer!

Today I flew two test flights with the NavWorx ADS600-EXP connected (and the UAT disabled per the AMOC) and with my skyBeacon providing ADS-B out.  It worked great with my iFly 740, providing TIS, FIS, and WAAS GPS data to the iFly.  HOWEVER, I requested a PAPR report after each flight and both reports showed approximately 50% "Baro Alt" errors!  I then disconnected the ADS600-EXP and flew a third flight and the error was completely resolved!

There had been a hint of problems in early testing with the skyBeacon and uAvionix suggested it might be interference from the NavWorx ADS600-EXP and I disconnected it for the remainder of the testing until today.  Looks like they were right!

I think it would be fine to use the ADS600-EXP as a standalone ADS-B receiver, but apparently it is not compatible with the skyBeacon.  I would definitely test for interference if using the ADS600-EXP in conjunction with any other ADS-B out device!

Update:

I assembled a Stratux dual-channel receiver with AHRS and VK-162 external GPS and remotely mounted it where the NavWorx ADS600-EXP had been.  I put a splitter cable on the radios and connected them to my external RAMI AV-74 antenna and put the VK-162 GPS on the Zenith STOL 750's glareshield at the base of the windshield.  It all worked great and best part, I got a clean PAPR report - no interference with the skyBeacon.  Of course, I didn't expect any since the Stratux has no transmitter, but I wanted to verify after my experience with the ADS600-EXP.

Splitting the antenna cable works great with the Stratux dual channel radios - there is apparently some signal loss by splitting the signal, but apparently this is more than made-up for by the superiority of the externally-mounted antenna!

BTW, it has occurred to me that the NavWorx ADS600-EXP might not cause interference with other ADS-B out devices such as the Garmin GDL-82, since they are "hard-wired" to the transponder and not wirelessly "sniffing" the signals as the skyBeacon does.  It would be interesting to see some reports of the GDL-82/NavWorx receiver combo!

Has anyone tried getting the AMOC for the ADS600B with the TX disabled yet?
