Unreliable WiFi

I've got an Apple airport at home that I connect to most often. 30% of the time the 720 will not connect to it. I use two laptops that connect to it 100% of the time every time. One is a Mac the other a Vista Dell PC.

Since it's a crap shoot to get wifi at most airports I visit I recently bought an ATT Elevate 4G hotspot to connect to the 720 and someday an iPad without needing too many data plans. My laptops connect to the Elevate ok, though the Vista PC gabe me fits in the beginning, it connects ok now. The Mac connects fine to it. The 720 has yet to connect to it and can't get any where. The Elevate is setup with WPA/WPA2 Personal, I've also tried it with WPA2 Personal AES. I've also tried it open and it won't connect even then.

I tried to connect to the Elevate again this evening and entered the SSID and Key but the 720 fails to even see it. It's within 3 feet, and I've moved it farther away.

After several days of tweaking testing cursing tweaking testing cursing I think I've found the problem with connecting to the Elevate. Deep in its bowls is a setting related to battery life. "Weak Signal - longer battery life, shorted range", "medium Signal", "Strong Signal - Less battery life, longer range". I Jumped it straight to strong signal and it works. The 720 can see it and has no problem so far. I turned it on and ran update about five times today. The really strange thing about this is the Elevate hot spot was 18" from the 720 on the first try. After that the hotspot was in the next tee hangar prbably 45-50 feet away with a sheet metal wall between it and the 720. Not to mention the 720 is on the yoke.

Pretty happy with this now. Next I'll have to keep tabs on where in the house I am when the 720 can't connect to the AP in the house.

The setting is in the ATT Elevate Hotspot,

Different story today, this is where the unreliable part comes in. The hotspot is in the same spot in the hangar, the airplane hasn't moved. The 720 doesn't see the hotspot. Set the hotspot on the seat and it sees it but cannot associate. POwered off, three times and finally it gets connected. Downloads a bunch of updates. I go away do some work and come back. Power up the 720 and it can't get connected. power off four times, can't get conected. When I get the chance I touch the SSID for my hotspot and touch disconnect. Now it doesn't even try to connect to the SSID. Doesn't seem to see it at all. I add it as a new one, still doesn't even see it. Tried this three times and gave up for the night.

I'll call tomorrow as it appears the offices are closed at this time.

I figured out how to get the old SSID's off the list. At least it appears that way. You have to be quick to do it. There is a point where it displays them all in the WiFi List. touch one you want to get rid of and touch disconnect. It disappears. To get them to re-appear turn off wifi and turn it back on, it'll briefly display the list and if you're quick you can get several before the list goes blank while it tries to find a network. Finally my hotspot was the only one left and it connected.

We'll see if I can power off and re-connect a few more times this evening.
