Greetings,

I know there are a couple mounts in the store, a suction arm, and a RAM mount.  The best I've found for a panel is this one from ProClip, which maybe iFly should just stock.

The problem with all of these is that they use the "Richter" mounting system, which I find to be unstable, and insecure.  I've had the unit fall into my lap on a few occassions during rough engine starts, though I do use it in portrait mode, so it's a bit more likely to fall off.  While it's nice to have a quick disconnect, the very nature of the mounting system invites variation in the fit due to tolerances in manufacture, and also wear of the plastic.  Sadly, this is the only mounting option available on the 740b, and it's in fact my only real complaint about the unit. 

Has anyone come up with a more secure way to mount the 740b?

Making one myself has been an option all along, but step number one is always to ask what else is out there.  I've never liked the built in panel type docks, since they don't allow you to tilt the unit to avoid glare.  If there isn't something clever already out there, I'll put my poor drawing stills to work on something, assuming my 740b doesn't fall out of the new Airbike toy in the mean time :-)

I've thought of something that would be pretty simple, and should make for a more stable mount.  It won't even tax my poor drawing skills, or make me listen to the 3D printer whining for hours.  The proclip mount is in two parts.  There the thin Richter plate attached with 4 screws to their nice swivel mount.  The main problem is that the Richter mount wobbles around, partly because it's overlapping the slightly raised speaker locations on the unit. 

The idea would be to take an aluminum plate, larger than the Richter mount plate, and sandwich that between the Richter plate and the proclip swivel plate.  At the 4 corners of the aluminum plate, there would be threaded holes, most likely platenuts.  Screws can be threaded through those holes until they touch the back of the 740b.  The screws could have rubber caps, or they could even be sharpened to fit in small holes (carefully) drilled in the back of the case.  The size of the plate would need to be set to allow the 4 screws to have a wider stance, and also to hit solid locations on the 740b case.  You'd have to use some restraint to not overtighten the screws and break the Richter mount though.
