I tried to power up the unit at home to imput a flight plan and instead of using the battery I tried using a USB output on my laptop, The screen just flashes and then turns a light green/gray. Does the unit require more power than the USB port can supply?

Yes, it takes 12 volts. USB only provides 5 volts, and probably not sufficient amperage either.
