I've been unable to connect my Stratus 3i to either my Android phone or Galaxy Tablet to Ifly.

I connect to the Stratus wifi easily (or so it appears), but IFly just says "Waiting for Device".

I found a random person walking by who had Foreflight on an Iphone, and asked him to try, and it connected instantly.

The only advice I've found searching the web is that maybe I need to change to "Open ADS-B mode", but that I need a 3rd party app to do that, since all the Stratus-related apps are IOS.

The recommendations I found are to use  an app called "ADS-B monitor" [Andrew Sarangan]", just to make the change to Open ADS-B mode.

Does this make sense?

The following instructions are in the Stratus manual, but I'm not sure I understand if it's relevant (normally, I've been just turning off my mobile data when I'm in the air, or put it in airplane mode, and turn the wifi back on):

Why isn’t Smart WiFi working with my Android device?

Follow the steps below to change your WiFi settings:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Wi-Fi preferences > Advanced.
  3. Enable the Switch to mobile data or Switch to mobile data automatically option.

IMPORTANT: If you don’t disable this switch after your flight, your Android device will automatically use cellular data on networks with no internet access, or if poor signal quality is detected.

IMPORTANT: If you get a message that says This network has no internet access. Stay connected?, swipe left or right to dismiss it. If you selected yes or no, disable and re-enable the WiFi switch.

I don't know if the FltPlan Go or the app called "ADS-B monitor"  works, but I can confirm that you do need to switch the "Open ADSB" switch on to get any information from the Stratus 3i.  To do this you'll need a iDevice and download & install the Stratus Horizon Pro app.

Like you observed, your iFly will connect to the Stratus 3i, but it won't allow you to get any of the ADSB information.  Also, if womeone else uses your 3i with ForeFlight before you next use it, you will have to trun the switch back on again.

Well, I chose IFly because I use Android, no Apple. I'll give those things a try. But if FltPlan Go can integrate the feature into their software, maybe IFly can, too.

I wonder what will happen if I fly with someone using IOS / FF and we connect at the same time? Will the IOS always win?

This is something we're fixing at the moment.

I don't know if there's something in their code that would allow or make one win over the other, but AFAIK only one system can be used at a time.
