Good point, Walter.  Actually, now that you've reminded me, I've sort of done that already...except that I established my deviated course first, then used the rubber-band method to create a leg that matched the course I was flying.  That's worked well for me, as I (now) recall.

So, I still don't see a way to manually set a desired course on the hsi? I know the Garmin 660 760 and most of the other portables have this feature. As a cfi cfii mei it would be very beneficial to have this for students to practice with. Set the desired course, track it inbound then show station passage and track the cdi outbound. This would be very useful for private pilot checkrides.

David, I don't see any direct way to do it, either. But maybe it would work as well to tap anywhere on the Map and then in the pop-up QuickView select Flight Planning > Fly Direct to Here.... That would give you a bearing to a more or less random point. The student could fly to that point and after passing it, fly the reciprocal back to it.

In any case, I'm glad you asked--because I've never used the Instruments page in flight, and now I'm going to try it for some refresher practice.

I think the point is, it is not a "VOR feature." It is an alternative to creating a user waypoint by trying to devine it's lat/long in some mystical way. You. Create the waypoint by giving the direction and distance from any waypoint, VOR, airport, intersection, user waypoint.  Best use I've found for it is ODPs whuch call for a climb in a certain direction before turning.

Here's a couple of links that might help using certified IFR gps. All of which have an OBS function (like the old Lowrance did)

Radial in a flight plan: https://youtu.be/qb6k0DKWOcs

OBS mode (vs typical leg mode) https://youtu.be/tmOw0V_DZ9M (start @ 6:30 in)

Hope this helps clarify my earlier comments re: OBS mode on the old Lowrance.

ok - so now on departure from ABC fly runway heading until you intercept the 123 radial of the XYZ VOR,   XYZ then as filed :-)

So let's say I could pull up my flight plan click on ABC waypoint, set OBS mode 230 F (runway heading),   click on XYZ waypoint, select OBS mode 123 F

(perhaps fly draws the radial and inserts a hidden waypoint for the turn at the intercept kinda like those top of climb points etc.)

ok - time to stop thinking aloud and go shovel some snow :-)
