I would like this, because, as a CFI, I teach students (still) to intercept and track VORs. Still part of the PPL ACS. So, having this allows me, or them, to plan for cross country flights using VOR tracking only. GPS is fine, but doesn't teach tracking VORs.

Thanks, Chad and Ian. You both make excellent sense. I confess I was thinking too narrowly--about my own airplane, a SeaRey, which can do VOR navigation only in emergencies, using a Sporty's handheld that's patched into the intercom as "Comm 1-1/2".  I do practice with its VOR function now and then, just to see if I still remember how.  In theory it also does ILS, although I hope never to need it.

Don, I've toyed with buying a handheld with Nav in it for years. When I became a CFI I thought, "Now I can justify it!" But never did - the school has one if I really need it, but no way I'd really want to have to rely on that tiny screen to do nav, let alone fly an approach! :-) I'd be trusting iFly to do it if it came to that. To that end, I purchased extra batteries for my Stratux and tablet so that I always have power.

Ian, what I like best about the Sporty's handhelds is that when you turn them off they're really off! Almost all of the others just go to sleep and still draw power--only a few milliamps, sure, but enough to run the batteries down in a few weeks. So you can count on them being dead when you need them.

I made two Sporty's ILS landings one day, with another pilot aboard, ready to save us. He wasn't needed--but I didn't wear foggles and was aware of the surroundings all the time, even though I tried to ignore it all. The Sporty's omni thing works reasonably well, although the experience is slightly different from the hardware VORs in a Cessna.  I'd probably be able to get un-lost with the Sporty's if GPS goes away, especially if I have a chart handy. (I've actually had GPS go away, over the Chesapeake Bay, so I know the feeling of losing it.)

I haven't tried iFly's synthetic vision seriously for landing yet, but have made a few approaches solo, switching to the outside view on short final. I think it would be better than nothing at all in zero-zero conditions.

Sporty's newest handheld doesn't have the instrument things, but it does have real headset jacks so you don't need to look for the adaptor to use it in flight.

Feel the same way as you. Years ago I decided to get a handheld radio. When I thought about the difference between a VOR or LOC/ILS on a handhekd radio and a GPS, I decided to save my money for the GPS. 

How many years ago? The handheld GPS I bought was a brand new Lowrance Airmap 100 :D
