FINALLY got a chance to take my iPhone along with a student today. He was using Pilotage and I kept the iPhone running to keep from going afoul... (I fly in the NE, Lancaster, PA, and we have enough Class B/C P & R airspace around here to make a small nation jealous! Throw in TFR's popping up and your license is issued with a set of dice) At any rate, on a 4S of course the screen was small and hard to see with sunglasses. What did surprise me was a how fast the battery went down! Roughly 2 hours of usefulness. I actually turned it off on the way back. Otherwise pleased with it! If you are used to using one, I feel it could be your primary navigation device (VFR) in spite of the small screen. Now you would still want do your through preflight planning not just whip it out of your pocket when the F16's appear :) I would love to post a picture of my flight but I don't see any way to do that???

Curious is others use this with an iPhone? I have just been making local flights, and found if I shut the phone off between looks my battery life is acceptable for this use. Really comes in handy to check info, should I decide to 'spring another airport' on a student :)

You don't have to turn your iPhone off after using iFly to save the battery. Close the iFly app by pressing the Home button once. Then press the Home button twice to bring up images of all the apps that are currently running in the background. Drag the image of iFly off the screen to close it completely. Then press the Home key again to return to the home page.

Thanks guys! I find it easier to turn off the phone (standby) with the upper right switch. That way simply hitting the Home button and swiping it ON brings me right back to iFlyGPS and it updates my position within a second.
