Im thinking about  purchasing an I pad Mini and picking up the I pad  sub on my account. I presently use an 740b  and have  had all the Iflys  in the past starting with  the 700. Im very satisfied with the  Ifly products and the software.  Looking at an I pad mini  16GB  WIFI only  ( or do I need the celluar one with the GPS).  Ultimate plan would also wifi a Strattux onto the Pad for ADSB IN .  Would like comments from those using both or either (wifi or Celluar)  as to which way I should go.  Thanks  Dennis

I use an iPad Mini 4 with cellular and GPS. However, I cancelled my cellular service and connect to the internet via my iPhone hotspot while driving to the airport to have current weather when I arrive. If you use an ADS-B in device with GPS, you don't need an internal GPS in your iPad. However, if you want to use the iPad for navigation in your car, you might as well get one with internal GPS. I love my iPad Mini 4 running iFly GPS. It is much preferable to my Nexus 7 (2013).

I also use a windshield RAM mount for the iPad Mini 4. Very much preferable to looking down at a kneeboard. Although the plane I fly has dual Garmin 300 screens with navigation, I use the iPad for primary navigation.

It is a personal preference. Here's my experience.

I've been using an iPad without cellular capability since I started using one. Back then, I made the decision that spending the extra $100 on an external GPS made more sense than cellular capability. It is now about 8 years later and I have not missed it.

External equipment, like Stratux, satisfies GPS position needs.

Using my phone to create a WiFi hotspot has satisfied the need for a connection those times WiFi has not been available, something which has incurred less and less and less through the years. I think I have used the personal hotspot connection method less than a handful of times for an aviation-related purpose.

Also, depending on your cellular service, adding an iPad can be quite expensive.

True.

There are a good number who purchase the cellular version for the internal GPS and never add it to their mobile data plan. I don't know if it's still available or not, but I have friends who used to do it on an ad hoc basis. They'd activate a plan those few times they needed it and the cancel. Seemed more trouble to me than it was worth.
