Hello.  I am a VFR pilot, I have built a Van's Aircraft RV-9 with steam gauges and will be using the iFly GPS system with the SkyGuardTWX Vision-Pro Plus ADS-B Transceiver with AHRS on an iPad Mini.  I'm VERY new to the whole glass panel/synthetic instruments program.  I know that the VOR's/HSI's use the signal received from the navigational side of the NAV/COMM.  I only have a COMM in the plane, no NAV.  What I'm interested in knowing is, will the HSI/VOR function using the GPS signal from the Skyguard?

Sorry about the huge text!

Thanks,

Robert

I did a little playing around with the iFly GPS in my living room.  The HSI gives a CDI correction based on the next waypoint in the flight plan.

So, I answered my own question about the need for a VOR navigation receiver for the HSI to work.  However, the HSI is a redundant instrument, (more or less for me as a VFR pilot), because the flight plan shows the course I need to follow.

HSI was a huge improvement for those of us who grew up flying VOR and localizer needles before GPS was available.  Now, it's nice to have but not a lot different than following the magenta line on a moving map.
