OK, so I got the reminder email that my subscription was expiring, but didn't get a chance to go retrieve my ipad and ifly GPS to do updates on my home wifi. I thought I'd just fly with the expired database for a flight to a known destination.

The ifly 700 I have continued to work as a GPS as any GPS would, but the ipad defaulted to an expired demo version. I was not able to use the ipad at all.

Even if expired, the GPS program should still work. I don't even have the ability to check settings. I only get the following notice.

"Failed to obtain authorization from the server for evaluation session. Please check our internet and/or wifi connection. Would you like to attempt authentication again now?"

Selecting yes or no to the above question are the only choices I have. of course yes results in another message that the unit can't connect because I don't have wifi capability in the plane, and no brings up a thanks for trying ifly message and tells me I can purchase a subscription to gain access. selecting OK shuts the program down.

Whats going on here?

Any GPS should continue to function even if databases expire. I don't even think I hit a part of the cycle where any data expired, and it was only the ifly subscription that expired.

This is unacceptable.

Shawn, any ideas why I seemed to lose the program with it defaulting to a demo version?

I always renew my subscription well before it expires to avoid such problems. That's the easiest solution. I also would not leave the IPad in my airplane (if I owned one) so I would have it at home to update the data and do flight planning and check weather, etc.

EDIT: Not that it matters what I think, I don't agree IFly GPS should continue to work if our subscription has expired. If it did, people could continue to use it indefinitely flying VFR with expired charts.

Deal breaker for me. No other GPS will default to a useless brick if not updated on time.

Sure, you get the usual warnings that databases have expired, but the GPS still functions.

I have no use for the ipad other than navigation. It stays in the airplane just like the dedicated aviation GPS

Read the FAQs. This is not supposed to happen.

I knew that, but the reason for the post is to try to remedy this problem before I go with a competitor's program. I need to know that I can rely on ifly

When/how do you update your charts and data?

I think the FAQ's apply to the IFly device. IDK if any of them apply to a phone or tablet.
