is there a way to disable these from showing up automatically?  i find them annoying, and the other day they wouldn't go away despite leaving the pattern.

Try Menu>Setup>Map Settings >Next Page==>> > Auto-Show Apt Diagrams

To make the airport diagram go away, tap Map on the bottom left of the screen.
