Just started using iFly on an iPad with Stratux, after using WingX for several years.  WingX was OK, but it's display of traffic is very distracting, and seeing traffic is the main reason I got the Stratux.

I tried to find the answers to my questions in the users maunual with no luck.  My apologies if these questions have been discussed in other posts.

1. On the main map display, there is a small white box showing a distance from something - like the one that shows 47NM on page 9 of the manual - what does this distance represent?  I tried to upload a picture of what I'm referring to - hope the upload worked.)

2. Is there an easy way to determine the aircraft's bearing and distance from a certain pont - not one in a flight plan.  For example, ATC may ask your position from a certain airport.  Or I may want to deviate and go to a particulate point I see on the map - what's the best way to do these?

Thank you in advance.

Mark

Hi Mark,

I'll see if I can help a little...

1. Your picture didn't upload so not sure what you're seeing. I'm guessing it's one of the instrument boxes that is being displayed. Try this: in the lower right is a button labelled "Inst Group" - try selecting Basic or Extended then click on the NRST button and select something from the list and click the D button. That should show the distance to that location in one of the white boxes. You can customize the instruments shown and drag them around the screen to suit. Take a look through the "iFly Pictures & Feedback" threads to see different instrument layouts and depiction of traffic.

2. You can tap on a spot anywhere on the map and the Quickview box will pop up. If it didn't default to the Nav tab (happens when tapping on/very near an airport) select the Nav tab and you'll get distance and bearing to that spot from your current location. A second tap anywhere on the screen will close the box. You can also do a long press on the screen (hold till the circle dots come up) and a shortcut box will show. The header of the box will show the distance but not the bearing. There is an option there for Direct To. I also like to have the Distance Rings setting set to Dynamic. Find this under Menu, Map Settings. Then when you pan around to look at something the edge of the ring where the cross hairs are displays how far it is from your location.

Not sure if you've discovered it yet but you can also put the program in to Simulation mode and fly around. Go to Menu, About, Start Simulation Mode. You'll start at where the map is centered at that time.

Hi, Mark.  Welcome to iFly!

Sorry, don't see your uploaded picture, but for your first question I'm guessing you're referring to the black distance ring that is always present on the moving map.  As you zoom the map scale in and out, the black ring stays the same size on the screen, but the numbers in the white box will change to let you know the current scale.  (If you touch-and-hold the screen, then move your finger to drag it around, you'll see a similar light-blue distance ring temporarily appear to show the distance between your ownship and the center of the screen; you can drag the map to put a location of interest under that blue ring to get a quick distance/time check.)

To find bearing and distance between any two points--one of which you may choose to be your ownship--use two fingers to touch the two points of interest, and hold them there for a second.  A line will pop up between the two points with distance and bearing.  If you can't reach both points in one gesture, use two fingers to touch any two points on the screen to make the line appear, then touch/hold an end and drag it where you want it to be.  Stagger your touches slightly; the first finger will be the "origin".

Hope that helps!

Hi Tony,

Thank you very much.  That's what I was looking for.

Like the other EFB's I've used, there are usually several ways to accomplish the same thing.  I'm really impressed with the capabilities of iFly and it's really quite intuitive once you use it a little.

Thank you again, Mark

Hi Cobra,

Thank you.  Yes - you're correct that I was looking at the size of the black ring. And thanks for the "two finger" instruction.  It's different from what I'm used to but works very well.  I think I like it better.

Thanks again, Mark
