Picture this – I am flying along VFR and look down at my iFly 740 GPS and see that yes, I am on course. I check for traffic around me, looks clear. I scan my instruments, all OK. I look back at my GPS and it’s powered off. Somehow I missed that 15 second window.

Now, I jiggle the power wire and the system starts to boot. Good, because I am coming up on a waypoint. I check for traffic around me, looks clear. I scan my instruments, all OK. I look back at my GPS and it’s powered off. Somehow I missed that 15 second window again.

Repeat.

15 seconds is woefully inadequate and is potently unsafe. Now, rather than flying the aircraft I am trying to troubleshoot a problem and getting the iFly to rebooting again.

Solution: Pop up a warning that external power has been lost. Leave the notice up and let the pilot decide what action to take. Power down or continue on internal battery. You could even show a countdown timer for internal power remaining and an audible warning.

While on the ground, no problem. In the air, not good.

Thanks for listening.

Seems like, since it has an internal battery, it would automatically switch to battery power and show you a big alert of some sort with maybe a countdown timer for how long the battery will last.

Mr. Kinberger,

I see your concern with the time alotted to acknowledge the shut down process with a healthy proper scan.

I am a little more concerned with the unit not remaining on. Please send us an email at support@adventurepilot.com so we can get to the bottom of why the unit keeps losing power.

Another item to consider. My iFly 740 shuts off immediately if power is lost. No 15 sec. warning, nothing. The only way to prevent this is to set the screen brightness to something less than the default 100% each time the 740 is used. This is my second 740, the first one seemed to shut down randomly when power was removed, this one seems to do it all the time. There's a discussion about this somewhere else on this board. You might test your unit at home by starting it up on the wall adapter, then removing t he power plug and see if your unit gives the warning, or immediately shuts off.

The iFly team is aware of this and I can only hope they're working on a resolution. One thing I suggested that they may, or may not be doing is to set the default brightness to one step below 100% so the unit doesn't shut down if it experiences a power interruption. Another option that has been suggested is to have the software remember the last used setting for screen brightness and resume that setting when it is restarted.

Mr. Mike,

That behavior should not be the case. I apologize that you have had a few issues with the 740 series.

If you prefer, you may send an e-mail directly to support@adventurepilot.com, or call our support desk at 1-888-200-5129. I would like to get this unit back and make this right.
