I would think your coverage would be pretty solid. The external antenna will raise the db about 15 %, even out in the open, as compared to the internal, but the internal is strong to begin with...

Yes, it's along the top edge. If your unit has open view of the sky the antenna isn't required, but it will still help the reception some. If you're installing it in the panel, or deep under an eyebrow, etc, then an antenna would help even more. Since our antennas are only $25, some folks get it just for that little extra boost.

I use my 700 in an RV-8A, suction cup mounted to a pc of Lexan on top the instrument panel --- the "heads-up" display works great without any external ant.
