With all the TV hurricane coverage, I was surprised no signficant weather shows on iFly near Florida today, 8/1/2 .AM.  Nexrad coverage must be only very close to the mainland

Nope. Nothing happening yet. Don't trust the sensationalized weather channel. They've been waiting for this.  Trust the radar.

I'm a weather dork and believe me, it is painful to watch them hype things up (ie naming winter storms... who does that??) and issuing their own indexes (like the tornado condition index... what?) just to fall flat. 

Keep an eye on what the NWS forecast office for your area says, and for hurricanes what the National Hurricane Center says. 

If you're on the plains, highly recommend watching the Storm Prediction Center.
