I'm trying to reconcile this information with the description on the database purchase screen for the IFR database: "The only difference between this and the standard subscription is the inclusion of the IFR Low Enroute charts." Apparently what I am now reading here is there is in fact more of difference. Would have purchased the IFR subscription had there been the disclosure that approach plate updates were no longer included in the VFR version (aside from those obsolete ones in the unit at shipping).

Well noted, we will get our text updated right away to reflect our new policy. I recognize this is a running change in the data included in our VFR subscription. Here is a little background so you understand what is prompting the change; in the past we included the plates with airport diagrams for 2 reasons:

1) It didn't cost us any more to do so (which is no longer the case)

2) Technically the iFly would treat plates and airport diagrams the same; they were all packaged and distributed in the same file by state. So this was the easiest way to include Airport Diagrams in the VFR subscriptions.

Now, here are the factors prompting this change:

1) A big majority of VFR pilots do not actually want/need to keep the plates current. A bad side affect of our old method is the size of the updates. The Texas file itself is over 100megs. 95% of that is the plates. Now the VFR subscription only includes airport diagrams, so the download is MUCH faster.

2) We have additional cost to buy, QC, distribute, and support georeferenced data. We have decided to include this free of charge to VFR subscribers for airport diagrams. And we think most pilots will appreciate getting this in exchange for losing the ability to keep plates current.

3) The IFR subscription will be increased $20 to cover the georeference charge for the plates (this will not affect current IFR subscribers, only new and renewing subscriptions).

So, all that being said, if you are a VFR pilot and have already purchased a VFR subscription with the expectation of keeping your plates current, send an e-mail to support@adventurepilot.com and we will update your account accordingly. Jliltd, I'll forward this message and get your account fixed.

Thanks,

Walter

I wasn't trying to angle for a database upgrade gratis, Walter. I am delighted with my iFly and more importantly with you and your staff at Adventure Pilot. Now that I understand the new database structure I'd be happy to upgrade to the IFR database option for the price difference.

I want Adventure Pilot to thrive and prosper since you seem to truly understand regular pilots who can appreciate what you are doing at a fair price. That's something companies like Garmin just don't get.

I appreciate the follow-up clarification; I won't turn down $20 if you want to give us a call with your CC number. But I also don't mind honoring the letter of our original subscription if you need those plates.

Thanks,
Walter

I was just following this question out of general curiosity. The last answer by Walter demonstrates why his company is so different than other ones in the market. You get to talk to a person who makes decisions and is fair with their customers. Please know that we appreciate they way you run your business. Thanks.
