Just returned from the AOPA Summit in Hartford, CT, saw the IFly 700 for sale with one of the large retailers (Aircraft Spruce?) I talked with several other GPS providers and each of them mentioned that customers had come to them complaining about the sunlight readability of the IFly 700. I know that much of that is salesman talk, but I wondered what type of experiences current IFly users are having with the units in sunlight. I have a Piper Cherokee 140 and I don't believe there would be much of an issue but I'd like to hear from others before I make a final purchase decision.

Hi Sam - I have my iFly mounted in my Cessna 172 ( you can find some picture of my instalation in the 'Pictures' section), and I have never had any problem seeing the screen. I live in Utah and the sun can get quite bright here. I had a Cherokee 140 many years ago and I don't think you would have any trouble seeing the screen in that airplane either. - Jim_W

Sam,

I have a PA28/235 which is almost the same cabin as your 140. I have flown with mine for over one year. I have never had a problem seeing the screen. In fact I have mine mounted on top of dash mounted to the center post. (I removed the suction cup and made a clamp. so it is clamped to the center post) and it sits right up and does get a lot of the sun. But it has always been readable.

Sam: Have never had a problem reading my iFly 700 in my PA-22 and I have tried it in several mounting places (see pictures in the photos section of the forum). I also have a Garmin 295 (color) which washes out completely in direct sunlight, but the iFly has been consistently readable for me. You should know that when using the Sectionals and Terminal Area charts display modes that the actual FAA charts appear with the same muted intensity as the paper charts - it is not the fault of the iFly but rather that the FAA just does not use vivid colors on their maps. All the readouts ("Instruments") on the screen are always readable; and all the other display modes (Vector, Weather, Plates and Airport Diagrams) are as vivid and bright as any other GPS you would use in your cockpit. No regrets, in fact, just the opposite - I am very pleased with my iFly. And, in my opinion, the AP customer support is unparalleled - superlative, actually.. --Ralph .

I fly a Piper PA-28-181 and would highly recommend the IFLY to to anyone looking for a user friendly GPS. I looked at several different makes and models before choosing IFLY over a year ago and have nothing but positive things to say about it. I fly out of a small airport but most of my pilot friends who have seen this unit have already made the purchase and they all love it as well. I'm over 50 and my vision is not as good as it once was but I have never had any trouble seeing the display. In direct sunlight I simply use my hand to shaddow the screen but this is rarely necessary and is a minor inconvience for everything this GPS has to offer.
