Hi Ben,

There has been much confusion on this, including me.  What I understand now is the FAA was going to propose a their spec in June for the new weather services, and actual implementation into the ADSB system would be further down the road.  We're keeping our thumb on this, haven't heard anything yet about the new data.

Walter, any chance you could say how you came to that understanding?  It may be true, but is not what was widely reported.  According to this story six weeks ago, some of the new data started being broadcast in parts of the US on May 9:

From http://www.rotorandwing.com/2018/05/1...-deployed-june/ (emphasis mine):

Key Site deployment (first time these products will be broadcasted by external radios) started May 9, with remaining deployment across the country projected to be completed by June 7.

Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

FAA Adding New Weather Products to FIS-B
Pilots that are ADS-B In equipped will soon have access to new weather data in their cockpits over the 978-megahertz (MHz) Universal Access Transceiver link. This month, the FAA will begin broadcasting six new weather products: lightning strikes, turbulence, icing forecasts, cloud tops, graphical Airmen’s Meteorological Information (AIRMET) and Center Weather Advisories. The new weather information will complement the original 13 “baseline” weather products — including Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) mosaics, winds aloft and terminal forecasts — in the Flight Information Services-Broadcast (FIS-B) feed. Pilots will have access to the new FIS-B products when their individual avionics are updated. The capability and availability will vary based on individual ADS-B avionics, so please refer to your avionics manufacturer for details. For more information on ADS-B services and benefits, go to www.faa.gov/nextgen/equipadsb/capabilities.

This is what I was told by my main contact at the FAA on a recent call.  He sounded pretty confident, but could be wrong.  I'll keep looking and asking for details on a spec for parsing this data - if anybody finds something please post.

Thanks!
Walter
