I notice that AP is featuring the iFly 740b prominently and was a little surprised when looking through the "store" section that the 740 was only depicted as part of a bundle with the uAvionix ADS-B.  I believe I read "somewhere" in these forums that the 740 will only be available in limited quantities and the move to the 740b was to keep it more market-competitive.  As I understand it, the 740b has a 1100 nit screen brightness as opposed to the 740's 1300+.  I've had a great experience with my 740 and always have heartily recommended the 740 and then one thing occurred to me ... although at 1100 nits the 740b ought to be plenty bright, does it also still have the "military grade" touchscreen that will function with gloves on?  (I recently did some sub-freezing flights with my anemic cabin heater and really appreciated keeping my gloves on!)

John,

Since the recent release of the new iFly 740b GPS unit we have been getting a lot of questions regarding the differences and similarities between the iFly740 and iFly 740b models. Yes the touch screens are still the same. You can command the screen with gloves on.

The main difference between the iFly 740 and the newly released iFly 740b is screen brightness. Both are very sunlight readable. The iFly 740 model has a 1300 nit display compared to the iFly 740b model with a 1100 nit display screen. The difference is 200 nits of overall display brightness. The difference of 200 nits can be found in the tone of the screen. The iFly 740 has a ‘warmer’ tone screen vs. a ‘cooler’ tone 740b screen.

The similarities are that internals are almost identical as far as processing capabilities and battery life. The 740b is the same size as the 740. They both use the same mounting bracket equipment. All of the power accessories are the same for each iFlyGPS units (520, 700, 720, 740b, 740).

Thanks, JJ!

I frequently recommend the 740 to my friends and wanted to know the major differences with the 740b ... now I know!
