Under iFly for iPad I started a thread on ADS-B-in recently, which than diverted to the topic of which ADS-B devices include integrated AHRS (artificial horizon) input for the iFly.
Somewhere (in the iFly manual?) I read that iFly dedicated units (720, etc) can accept input from dedicated AHRS sensors.
What brought this up is that my co-owner, who is a sport pilot, is wanting to go for his private (PP) and our SLSA lacks the required artificial horizion among the panel's steam gauges.
His designated flight examiner, who is avionic savvy as far as I can tell, seems to be saying as long as he can get an artificial horizon into the cockpit he's good to go.
It occured to me that (because ADS-B in is perhaps only marginally useful) and that the in-plus-out units start getting both costly, cockpit cluttering (and maybe raise issue of "yes, but are they really OK for the year 2020?") that maybe getting a external horizon sensor that's JUST that might be simpler and may be significantly cheaper than trying to bundle in with ADS-B. Maybe even more reliable.
So two questions I'd like to throw in here:
1) Anyone know any such single-function AHRS devices compatible with the iFly and have any thoughts on the pros and cons of THOSE units?
When I tried to web search for such units I SEEMED to come up mostly with either ones that were part of ADS-B units, or ones that seemed to be selling sensors for other manufacturers to incorporate in their avionics.
2) Anyone know if we get an artificial horizon into the cockpit onto the iFly 740 screen this way if it's meeting requierments for him showing up for his private pilot checkride with it?
Does it Have to be certified by FAA or anything like that?
And if so would both the AHRS device and the GPS have to be?????
(Or, in reality, is it just a matter of "if his Designated Flight Examiner will accept it, that's good enough?)
