After receiving information requests from Shane, I took images of the screen, and tried unsucessfully to upload them to your site. For whatever reasons, I was unsucessful. I'm attaching them to this email, I will post the textual portion of this email to the forum, and you may do whatever seems apropriate with the images.
First off, we're talking a refurbed 720. The photos I took are a lot better than nothing, but the camera tried to correct the images. That means the difference in colors is a lot more discernable in the photos than they are on the screen.
Image one was taken with the 720 brightness at the level needed when the aircraft is used in the aircraft. The image shows a little difference between orange and red; but not enough that I would have picked it out. In the real world, there is no discernable difference. The green, as you can see, shows up nearly black. Again, in the real world, it's black.
In image 2, I turned the brightness down. This brightness level would be unacceptable in the cockpit, and the difference between red and orange is barely discernable when looking at the display itself. Green is now greener, etc.
It's unfortunate the camera processes the images to improve them, because it leads to a false impression. I should probably add that I'm not color blind, which is one of the first questions which would come into my mind if I were on your end.
I ran several tests with different maps (section, WAC, TAC, etc) to see if this made a difference. In only one case, image 3, was there a significant difference, and it wasn't in color. When I used a low altitude enroute chart, some of the gas prices disappeared entirely!
I consider that a far more significant issue, because it means I can't always depend on the data being shown.
I do not consider the color discernment an issue, I'm going to ignore the differences except when the price appears in black.
I would comment that Red, orange, and green, may not have been the best choice of colors, particularly for a small display based on this technology. Orange has both red and yellow in it, while green has yellow in it. Colors which do not share a common content might have been better, like red, yellow, and blue, and poossibly black.
