Thanks Jim - I had a funny feeling if it were easy it probably already would have been addressed by someone in the GPS arena...but it never hurts to ask.

I wont hold my breath - I'll just enjoy the fine navigation and other benefits this unit provides - keep my eye on the barometric altimeter and minimize or eliminate the GPS indicated altitude from the display since it is only applicable in an extreme case should the std altimeter fail. Hopefully this thread will be helpful should someone else who is new to flying/GPS have these questions.

Thanks again for the education.....

Dave

The satellites are at somewhat more than 400 miles but the effect is pretty much the same....

here is a link to a site with some interesting info on how this all works. Neat to know even if you don't intend to build one from scratch.....

I have been quite happy with the accuracy of my IFly700 - altitude and horizontal position compare closely with my Garmin 496 and my Garmin 430W, especially considering that the IFLy GPS antenna is pretty inexpensive. My only beef is that I continue to get RFI with my ANC headsets and intercom. I can't move the IFly because I have a very small cockpit and I have it stuck to the only side window that keeps it out of the way. I plan to sell the IFly regretfully and get something for electronic charts that will fit on a lapboard, like an IPad with external GPS or a Garmin 696. If anyone is interested in buying my IFLy (less than a year old), let me know.
