It occurred to me that, in the event of a GPS outage, (due to our equipment failure, our government blocking the signal, bad guys blocking/destroying the signal, etc.) would it be possible/desirable for iFly to somehow sense this and offer us the option to be able to continue from our last known position, on our last known heading/speed and keep the map moving below us?  Similar to simulator mode, except change the aircraft icon to a big circle or similar so we know something is amiss.  Give us the simulator speed controls, and the ability to move the "you should be here" icon to points on the map when we find we're not where our simulator says we are.

Once iFly re-acquires the GPS signal, it would revert to normal operation and aircraft icon.

That's an interesting idea--to have a digital chart that keeps pace with the airplane's probable speed and course when GPS goes pffft! and there's no paper chart in the cockpit. Dragging the chart manually would work, but it would be so much better for it to move itself. Then you'd only have to make minor corrections manually instead of big jumps. Once while Iwas crossing the Chesapeake Bay the GPS signal disappeared or was blocked (I suspect by the nice folks at PAX River NAS, which I was near). My GPS at the time just gave up and dimmed its screen to the point that I couldn't see the map. No paper chart. Fortunately, I had just checked my magnetic heading and was able to keep on course until the GPS signal came back about 15 minutes later. But it would have been comforting to look a chart now and then.

I went on a long XC today, and had a chance to use my iPad Mini, which apparently doesn't have GPS.  A hundred or so miles on my way, I had already been tracking my progress just be dragging the map along, which worked well enough, but I started the simulator.  The simulator started by placing the plane, about where I actually was, and all I had to do was click it up to speed, climb to where I was, and turn to place the aircraft icon on the correct course, and it followed along just as I would have liked.  It's not automatic, but it still will work.

My iPad Mini 4 has GPS, but it came with cellular also.  Do you own a Stratux with GPS?  That will work great with your iPad Mini.

I'm not sure why my iPad didn't track us.  As it turns out it does have GPS, and it's set for iFly to get position services when I'm using it, so I'll have to do some more investigating.

Yes, I have a Stratux, no I don't have the GPS, as when I built it, I didn't have anything but the iFly, and I figured one GPS was enough.  I may order the AHRS just because I can now use it. Perhaps the GPS as well, if I can't figure out why my iPad GPS isn't working with the iFly program.

I'd really like it if iFly team could get whatever they need from the STRATUS people so iFly could use the Stratus WiFi.  We had that system installed in our C172.  Maybe if all the iFly owners called Stratus (or stop at their booth at Airventure) and told them they'd like to buy their product, if only it would work with iFly.   :-D
