I have used an early iPad mini that was not reliable, so I replaced it with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (non-cell connected) which fit in the same mount as the iPad mini, and worked fine - not as bright as the 740, but with one on each side of the cockpit, one is always readable. This year I replaced the Tab S2 with a Tab A as it is cell connected, and was "free" with a data plan. It is more rectangular - talled and narrower than the Tab S2 - which I don't like as much - but it seems to function fine (now that 11.0.63 is installed).
This is not a recommendation, just my experiences and choices. I do consider the 740 the primary and most reliable device, the tablets are for redundancy and the co-pilot.
For an update - we flew with both tablets today, the Tab A and the Tab S2. The ab S2 is clearly brighter (with both turned up to max brightness) and has clearer color on the sectional.
I'll try to get a side-by-side photo one of these days.
